Server Vulnerability

Security scanners are used to detect unsafe settings in servers, desktop PCs and other network-connected equipment. The equipment can then be (usually manually) reconfigured or hardened, to better withstand attacks from viruses and hackers. They are also called vulnerability testers or security assessment tools.

Security scanning is related to penetration testing (vulnerability exploitation). Penetration testing means actually carrying out an exploit and compromising a server through its network connection. Security scanning only involves detecting and warning of potential or theoretical exploits. Penetration testing is harder to automate and usually involves a human tester, who uses semi-automated tools.

For example, a scanner might warn that a guest account exists on a server. The server might already be patched against all known guest account exploits, meaning that a penetration tester will not be able to successfully attack it. However it is still better to disable the guest account to protect against potential future, unknown, exploits.
