Though there are a large number of WAMP packages available that do the complete install of Apache, MySQL, and PHP without the developer needing to know the details of the configurations, somtimes it can be better to do the install of the individual pieces in the stack. When doing this, the developer has a better understanding of how everything is configured and related, which may alleviate issues down the road.
The first step in having a working AMP is, of course, to set up an Apache Web Server on a Windows machine, which was covered in the article Setting Up Apache on Windows. Having Apache running allows a developer to serve basic HTML pages from the machine, but the true power of web sites is in scripting and database accessibility.
To this end, installing MySQL on Windows will allow the site to have access to a database, while installing PHP will allow the site to have access to a powerful scripting language. These two components make up the M and P of WAMP.
