First Of All, Is This a Project?

Everyone has projects, but everything is definitely not a project. For example, the act of making copies for your boss is a task. But what if you’re making copies of booklets you designed for an annual managers’ meeting? Is this a simple task or part of a larger project?

Understanding what makes up a project is fundamental in deciding how to use MS Project. Unless you’re doing timekeeping in an administrative project (that is, keeping track of overhead and hours), you wouldn’t bother setting up a special project for your copy-making task. Doing so would only be time-consuming and probably take longer than simply making the copies. Designing and making copies of booklets, however, may be more detailed and lengthy. There may be multiple tasks, goals, and milestones. Maybe you’re deciding whether to make copies yourself or have it printed. This sounds more like a project!
